CAUTION SERIES

When commuting to U of H as an art student, the scenery of prolific signage began to catch Felipe's eye; election signs, yard signs, construction signs. He slowly began to collect broken or run-over construction signs and assemble them together. He’d intentionally leave small, functional details of the signs, like a hinge, on his pieces to give it a structural and a more sculptural element, as opposed to being a flat 2 dimensional piece on a wall.  Knowing there was only so much construction signs he could realistically acquire, and wanting to formalize his concept, Contreras turned his attention to translating these elements on to canvas which, in turn, allowed him to manipulate scale and dimension accordingly. Today the caution series continues to be Felipe’s most well-known work.
